March is National Craft Month and the 26th is National Make Your Own Holiday Day. I asked our own resident crafting genius what he would come do. Naturally, he said ROBOT DAY! So we thought we’d share our fun and hopefully offer just one spark of creativity for the inspired crafter in you!

Stef’s Robot Idea

I took the paper plates that I had in the kitchen and some multi-colored brad craft clips and made what I thought was a good prototype. Silly, Stef; Robots are for children.

Step 1: Make a Hidden Mickey

According to Liam

So Liam attempted a 3D Robot with our first set of paper plates. We thought it would hold up, but by morning it collapsed. lol. SO Liam convinced me to stop at Target and buy “better” paper plates for crafting. (haha) So $10 of the cheapest looking paper plates I can find we now have plenty to craft with. (oh, boy!)

So we started over on Liam’s idea and of course he had to start with a hidden mickey.

Step 2: Make a 2-D humanoid…

(or whatever your creativity leads you to create.)

So Liam and I managed to make a two-Dimensional version of the creation he had in his mind. At this point, I thought we were finished, but I asked if his creation needed a face. Liam said, “I’m not finished yet. I need to grab my paints.”

(awesome. The words every parent loves to hear.)

Step 3: Decorate Your Creation

With your best art supplies.

I have to admit, I didn’t see Liam’s vision at first, but I couldn’t deny that once he finished it, he had created something special to him. A couple months ago, we watched Big Hero 6. The last time we watched this movie, it was a little too intense and scary, but this time he really liked the idea of robots being created to help people.

Step 4: Create Something That Inspires You…

I had to include this picture because this was the image that Liam was working off of in his mind (who knew!) When we watched the movie and discussed the plot, we also discussed how currently robots and robotic elements help people with surgery, limb replacement, and a number of different things in our world every day.

When you create your own holiday, make sure to find something that inspires you and find a way to celebrate it so that it fuels your creativity, optimism and maybe even share it with a few friends. We would love to see pictures of what you come up with, too! Please make sure to send us some pictures. You can comment on this blog, send us and email or message us through Facebook Messenger!
